![]() ![]() Malcolm Hartzog, who got the best Rutgers could offer early, finished with the game ending interception on an overthrow. Myles Farmer saw his interception turn into a Nebraska lead on the very next play. ![]() Brandon Moore ended a potential scoring drive for the Knights. The Huskers allowed a surprisingly high 233 yards, but after getting hit on a couple deep shots, Nebraska made whichever Rutgers quarterback on the field uncomfortable, generating pressure up front, getting around the receiver and getting the ball loose and finishing with three important interceptions. Good work by Bill Busch adjusting and Nebraska locking in after a rocky start. The front started closing down rushing lanes and Rutgers started getting antsy, which led to 30 pass attempts from a team that frankly doesn’t throw it well. After that the Scarlet Knights finished with 63 yards on 27 carries the rest of the game. Nebraska’s defense gave up 52 rushing yards on Rutgers first two drives. It’s important to have an open mind about these units. Still the pass protection wasn’t good, Thompson left another game and continues to take an unsustainable level of punishment. Those players allowed Thompson to dunk or hit crossers, biding his time for the big strike to Palmer. Trey Palmer had the game winning score with his touchdown following the Myles Farmer interception, but two big targets emerged in the second half in Travis Vokolek and Grant. ![]() However Thompson shook off each bad moment and kept putting himself in front of Rutgers defenders, hung in tough and made some throws. It wasn’t pretty, but Nebraska actually completed more passes than it might seem as Casey Thompson finished 24-for-36 on the game, but two poor interceptions mar the stat line. At least no one fumbled while running the ball. And the defensive fronts don’t exactly get worse here on out. The Huskers have a lot of issues up front. Anthony Grant didn’t have a lot of openings and when he did the yellow penalty flags rained down. Still you’d like to walk out of a game with a better showing than 29 carries for 72 yards. Nebraska didn’t run the ball efficiently or effectively on Friday against Rutgers, but the Huskers did enough to keep the Scarlet Knights honest at times. How'd the team grade out overall? Pretty interesting considering the weird, gritty win. It took almost everything to go right for the Huskers in the second half, but NU put itself in position to enjoy the fruits of its labor. Nebraska football erased a 13-0 deficit in the second half of the 14-13 win over Rutgers on Friday night. ![]()
